Start With A Review Of The Area

Rather than immediately honed in a specific tourist attraction in an area, try to take a broader approach right off the bat. Use travel guides to get a general feel for the area you will visit; take your time and read some notes about the trip. If possible, look for well written, engaging pieces about where you will be traveling as well. Typically, travel guides do not offer a general overview that describes the basic features of an area, including, currency cultural climate, and statistics in general. Use this information to form a picture in your mind about what the place might be like; that way, you’ll have a better idea about what you want to focus on while there.

Narrow Your Focus

After getting a basic idea about your goals, begin to hone in on a few key places or attractions. Use a few different travel guides to get a feel for who is considered the most significant attraction or “must see” in the area, then read more detailed information about each. If you already have a certain kind of place you want – that is, the beach or a place to go hiking – look for information about the place in a travel guide that you use.

Keep An Open Mind

Part of the joy of traveling is seeing and being exposed to different cultures and things that you otherwise never would. Therefore, you must be willing to keep an open mind and look for places that you might not normally be interested in. When reading travel guides, do not skip the whole section just because you think you’ve certainly never been interested in the topic, but rather view it as an opportunity to find out about something different. You may be surprised and find an idea or suggestion that sounds very interesting, after all.
